These criminal justice and social assistance organizations provide great volunteer oportunities around the DMV area, as well as some chances to get involved from home, wherever that may be. Purses for a Purpose
Collects good condition, mid-sized, arm deep purses and handbags that can fit donated travel-sized toiletries in order to deliver them to the homeless women.

Free Minds Book Club

Uses books and creative writing to empower young inmates to transform their lives. Free Minds hosts inmate book clubs, publishes inmate poetry on their blog, and mentors and connects them to supportive services throughout their entire incarceration into reentry.

Power Inside

Works with women and families on a variety of social issues in Maryland. They facilitate support groups, provide tutoring services, inform people about their healthcare options, as well as assist in providing daily care for women and their children.

Books Through Bars

As their name suggests, they provide inmates with books through large scale donations to dozens of prison libraries. They also create, publish, and distribute Insiders' Art, a collection of prisoner art and writing that also provides commentary on the current state of the prison industrial complex.

The Innocence Project

A fan favorite of many criminal justice advocates, Innocence Project provides legal assistance to potentially wrongfully convicted individuals while they are incarcerated. They also advocate for and demand criminal justice reform to prevent wrongful convictions in the first place, as well as support exonerated prisoners upon release.
